Quick answer: To create a Meta ad account, open Meta Business Suite → Settings → Accounts → Ad accounts, click Add, and choose Create a new ad account. Enter a name, then select your time zone and currency. These two can’t be changed later. Choose who the account is for, give yourself Full control, and click Create. Finally, add a payment method so your ads can run.
An ad account is where your Facebook and Instagram campaigns, budgets and billing live, so it’s the first thing you need before running any Meta ads. This guide walks you through the full setup in about five minutes, and then covers the most common problems people run into.

What do you need before creating a Meta ad account?
- A Facebook profile that you can log in with.
- A business portfolio (Meta Business Manager) that you are an admin of. If you don’t have one yet, create it free at business.facebook.com.
- Your time zone and currency. Use the ones your business reports in, because you can’t change them later.
- A payment method such as a credit or debit card, to add once the account is created.
How to create an ad account in Meta Business Manager (step by step)
Step 1: Open Business Settings
Go to business.facebook.com and select your business portfolio. Click the Settings (gear) icon in the left menu to open Business Settings.
Step 2: Go to Ad accounts
Under Accounts, click Ad accounts. This shows every ad account your business already owns or has access to.
Step 3: Click Add and choose “Create a new ad account”
Click the blue Add button and select Create a new ad account. The other options are for claiming an account you already own, or requesting access to someone else’s.
Step 4: Enter the account name, time zone and currency
- Ad account name: use something clear, such as “Brand Name – Main Ads”.
- Time zone: pick the time zone your business runs in. Your reports and budget schedules follow it.
- Currency: pick the currency you’ll be billed in.
Important: double-check the time zone and currency before you continue. Meta doesn’t let you edit them once the account exists. The only fix is to create a new ad account.
Step 5: Choose who the ad account is for
Select My business if you’re advertising for your own business. Select Another business or client if you’re an agency or freelancer setting this up for someone else.
Step 6: Add people and set permissions
Add yourself, plus any team members who need access, and choose their level:
- Full control: can manage campaigns, billing, settings and people. Give this to yourself.
- Partial access: can manage campaigns or view performance, without control over billing or settings. Good for team members or freelancers.
Click Create, and your new ad account appears in the list.
Step 7: Add a payment method
Your ads can’t run until the account has a payment method. Open the new ad account, click Add payment info, and enter your card details. For a full walkthrough, watch How to Set Up Billing & Payment in Meta Ads Manager.
Why can’t I create a Meta ad account? (Common problems and fixes)
The “Add” button is missing or greyed out
You don’t have full control of the business portfolio. Ask an existing admin to open Settings → People and give you Full control. Then refresh the page.
“You’ve reached the limit of ad accounts”
New business portfolios can usually create only one ad account at first. Meta raises the limit as your business builds a spending history. Until then, use the account you already have, or request access to a client’s existing account instead of creating a new one.
The new ad account was disabled or restricted
This often happens with brand-new accounts that have no payment method, or when the profile or business portfolio is unverified. Go to Account Quality in Meta Business Suite to see the reason. Complete any verification it asks for, then click Request review.
I chose the wrong currency or time zone
These settings are permanent. Create a new ad account with the correct settings, and stop using the old one. Closing it is optional.
What should you do after creating your ad account?
- Add billing: set up your payment method.
- Connect your Facebook Page: link your Page to Business Manager, so your ads can run from it.
- Install the Meta Pixel: follow How to Install Facebook Pixel on WordPress, so you can track results.
- Give your team access: see How to Share Admin Access in Meta Business Manager.
