Quick answer: To sign out of a Google account on Android, open Settings, go to Passwords and accounts (on some phones Accounts or Users and accounts), tap the Google account, then tap Remove account and confirm. This signs the account out of every Google app on the phone. It does not delete the account, and you can add it back at any time.
Android doesn’t have a single sign out button for Google. Instead, you remove the account from the device. This is useful when you sell or lend a phone, switch accounts, or stop a work account syncing to your personal device.

What do you need before signing out?
- Your phone’s screen lock (PIN, pattern or password). Android may ask for it to confirm the removal.
- Your Google password, so you can sign back in later.
- A backup of anything stored only on the phone, if this is the only Google account on it.
How to sign out of a Google account on Android (step by step)
Step 1: Open Settings

Step 3: Select the Google account
Tap the Google account (the Gmail address) you want to sign out of.

Other ways to sign out
- From the Gmail app: tap your profile picture, choose Manage accounts on this device, pick the account and remove it.
- From another device: go to myaccount.google.com, open Security, find Your devices, select the phone and choose Sign out. This helps if a phone is lost.
- Selling the phone? Remove all accounts first, then do a factory reset, so the next owner isn’t blocked by Factory Reset Protection.
Can’t remove the Google account? Common problems and fixes
The Remove account button is missing or greyed out
This usually means the account is managed by a work or school admin, or the phone is a managed device. Contact your IT admin, or remove the work profile under Settings → Passwords and accounts.
Android warns that data will be deleted
Only the copy on the phone is removed. Emails, contacts and photos stored in your Google account stay safe online and come back when you sign in again.
Apps stop working after removal
If it was the only Google account, the Play Store and other Google apps need an account. Add another one under Add account in the same settings screen.
